The following is the remains of a house dating back to the late 1800s located
at the corner of 143rd street and Harlem Avenue. You will not be able to view it from the
road as it is within the wooded area across from a driveway that is on the Northwest side
of the mentioned corner streets. Be aware that the driveway in this area is off limits to
parking and you can be arrested for trespassing on that particular property. This means that there is no place to park nearby so you will have to hike the
woods from a different location. Please be safe when visiting the area and treat it
with respect.
It may appear strange that a house being so far from the cemetery is being
shown here. Do remember though that the settlement of Batchelors Grove did extend this far
and elsewhere.
The date of the house was determined by a bottle that was found and analyzed
from within its garbage pit. Back in the old days there were no areas designated for
garbage like the landfills we have today. In order to dispose of their garbage they would
pick a location close to the home and dig a large hole, use the edge of a hill side or at
times a dried out well was used. So far the "pit" only shows indications that it
was dug out for the sole purpose of garbage. As you can see the photograph does not
clearly indicate the true dimensions.
