It's that time of year when everybody starts thinking about ghosts and haunted houses.
That's why Edward Shanahan, one of Chicago's most respected psychics, is hosting an entertaining evening of tours, psychic readings and more at the haunted Humphrey House in Orland Park Saturday, Sept. 26.
Shanahan will be joined by a paranormal investigator, paranormal "feeler" and historian from the Orland Historical Society.
Constructed in 1881, the Humphrey House was previously owned by Sen. John Humphrey, a native of Wisbech, Norfolk, England, who wielded considerable influence throughout what is today suburban Cook County. According to historians, it was the second house ever built in Orland Park and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It is located at 9830 W. 144th Place.
Shanahan discovered its haunted potential when he happened to drive by the historic landmark several years ago. Shanahan, who said he felt "pulled" to the house, drove up and knocked on the door.
After several visits to the landmark, Shanahan has concluded that it is indeed haunted.
"There's no doubt that some of the Humphrey family remains in the home," he explained. "Photos, digital recorders and high-tech security cameras have captured paranormal activity in the home."
Those who haunt the location are believed to be Humphrey's wives, including his first wife, who was found dead in their home in 1898, and their first child, who died at birth. The Humphreys also have a connection to another nearby paranormal hotspot, Bachelor's Grove Cemetery in Midlothian.
Mrs. Humphrey's family had a large plot at the cemetery, where she and the senator buried their first child. However, when Mrs. Humphrey passed away, she was buried at a different cemetery, and it is rumored that she might be the Madonna of Bachelor's Grove, an apparition of a woman holding an infant child.
Throughout the Sept. 26 event, Shanahan will perform a variety of spiritual readings, including palm readings, psychometry one-on-one readings, and conscious channeling/medium readings using items of loved ones who have passed away. Guests are invited to bring an item of a deceased loved one, such as glasses, watches, rings, etc., to assist with readings. Guests are also encouraged to bring cameras and other paranormal equipment.
